We’re pleased to say that Rails Girls Bristol 2014 was a huge success. A massive thanks to everyone who came along on the day and to our amazing coaches who did a great job demonstrating that programming doesn’t have to be scary!

I love working in tech and in my experience no other industry comes close in terms of culture and community. However, there’s no doubt that it’s currently a very male-led industry. I rarely meet female web developers or tech entrepreneurs and I don’t like to think that women are missing out on such an awesome industry. It’s been a real pleasure working on Rails Girls Bristol and I hope we managed to inspire a few women to give programming a shot. Here’s what we did on the day…

We started the day with a simple introduction to coding led by Mark and Rob who spoke briefly about HTML, CSS and how the web actually works.

Next, Simpleweb’s Pete led everyone through tryruby.org, giving everyone who attended their first chance at writing some Ruby.

After lunch, our very own Paul led the Bentobox exercise which introduces some scary tech jargon and makes it much less scary! Checkout this Speaker Deck presentation on the Bentobox exercise if you want to learn more.

Finally, Ruby developer of 4 years, Camille, got everyone building their very own app!

After a few final words from our coaches and sponsors, we all headed to the pub for a well-deserved drink!

A final shoutout to our co-sponsors, Brightpearl and GitHub who made it possible to put on such an amazing event for free and to the University of Bristol and Chartered Institute of IT for providing a space for the event at the wonderful At Bristol science centre.

We’re already looking forward to the next Rails Girls Bristol event. Watch this space!

At Simpleweb, we love getting involved in local events to share our knowledge and help educate others.
