The Crowd is a company exploring new ways to help large organisations reduce their carbon emissions through a series of events and two online tools developed with Simpleweb. We at Simpleweb believe The Crowd’s mission is an important one, so we made our first investment in this fantastic company back in early 2015.

The Curve is the first platform we worked on with The Crowd. It allows large organisations to share and access data that will help them to reduce their energy costs and carbon emissions, tackling climate change faster than ever before.

The Curve MVP was opened to invited users in March 2015, and we’ve been working with The Crowd ever since to develop the Curve into a reliable, robust and scalable tool that can help organisations around the world.

Recently, The Crowd released a report on their findings from the Curve to date. The report looks at data uploaded by 90 organisations covering 646 energy investment projects, with organisations making data available from between 6-86 of their energy investment projects.

Some of the organisations who have taken part in this early stage include the BBC, BT, IBM, Coca-Cola, Sony and Jaguar Land Rover. You can find full details on the data and the users in The Curve Insights report.

“Does this represent a new spirit of collaboration?” the report asks. It certainly seems that global organisations may be willing to work together on climate change in a way that we have rarely seen before in the corporate world.

Not only are corporations open to the idea of collaboration on energy efficiency, but the average payoff may be larger and sooner than we thought. The average payback for projects is just 3.3- 3.6 years, and is often accompanied by a number of ‘co-benefits’, most commonly, a significant increase in employee satisfaction.

The report concludes:

“The Curve data evidences the attractive investment class that energy management has become. When you marry the attractive paybacks, the multiple co-benefits and positive star ratings, energy projects should be an easy sign-off for CFOs. The challenge often lies in finding the best projects and accessing credible business case information. By encouraging and enabling the sharing of experience, the Curve wants to help.”
