This weekend, as part of Bristol Digital Week 2015, we ran a workshop helping kids and young adults build their first web app using Ruby on Rails. We had an amazing day and we’ve received some great feedback.

We started the day with a talk on what it’s like to work in tech, followed by a quick intro to Ruby on Rails. We then ran through a few exercises on tryruby.org to give everyone a bit of a feel for Ruby before we started building the app…

We borrowed an app tutorial from Rails Girls, an initiative encouraging women and girls to get into programming. We’ve had great success organising Rails Girls events in Bristol and we were excited to helps kids get involved too.

Adam (@labfoo) led the workshop, running attendees through the tutorial so that by the end, everyone had created their very own web application (a sort of basic blog with uploading functionality).

A big shoutout to Simplewebbers Adam, Tom and Chris and our friends Nic, Rob and Denis at CookiesHQ for making Rails Kids happen. Watch this space for more like this in the future…!
