We’re ecstatic to share the news that OLIO, the world’s only neighbour-to-neighbour food sharing platform, has surpassed one million global users.

Particularly given the current calls for major action against climate change and the huge impact that global food waste has on the environment, OLIO’s mission to tackle this at its heart – with local communities – is much needed.

So far, OLIO users have shared over 1.5 million portions of food between neighbours, which is the environmental equivalent of eliminating 3.8 million car miles from the road.

In ten years, we want over one billion people using OLIO to share their spare food

Hitting this incredible one million user milestone is another demonstration of OLIO’s impact and suggests a level of momentum that will hopefully enable them to grow the movement further and faster.

Co-founder and CEO Tessa Clarke says: “We’re absolutely thrilled to hit this monumental milestone and amazed by the impact we’re having all over the world.

“To have one million OLIOers standing up to the issues of waste, hunger and climate change by sharing their spare food is such a powerful thing.”

As our first ever investment at Simpleweb, we’re so proud to see how far founders Tessa and Saasha have brought OLIO over the years. From idea validation, to building the first version of the app, to a point at which they raised a massive $6million in Series A investment and now employ a team of 21 incredible people who’re working hard to continue growing the business.

OLIO may have surpassed one million users, but the startup has even bigger plans for the future. Tessa says: “We have an unashamedly bold vision. In ten years, we want over one billion people using OLIO to share their spare food – this is because the planet needs us to achieve this if humanity is to stand any chance of mitigating the worst effects of climate change.

“Plus, it’s becoming increasingly clear that to sustainably feed the planet we don’t need to grow more food – what we need to do is eat the food we already have, and food sharing will play a pivotal role in that.”
