What we’re up to… (Secret squirrel can you hear me?)

by Mark P. Filed under: Company

It’s been a while since we posted about our current projects and clients, so here is a quick round up of some of the things that we’re allowed to talk about!

We’re nearly at the end of a full-on sprint for GoApe: Launching in the next month this is massive for us and for GoApe so we’re all beavering away finalising this project. More details after we’ve launched.

ContactZilla is rocking along. Our unified contact manager for businesses, has gained some great press, 1,000′s of users and is about to get a string of cool features and enhancements. Check the ContactZilla blog for updates. We are so looking forward to the iPhone app…

In super stealth mode at the moment is a Ruby on Rails project for a “social shopping” start-up. We are developing some cutting edge tech for these guys… There’s rumour of a sneak preview at Being Open, we’ll have to wait and see…

We’ve got our own stealth project which will be ready soon. Code named “Bucket of Love”, it’s a system for crowd sourced idea generation. We think that it’ll be well received… More news in the next few months!

Another imminent release for us is a large community based project. It’s transitioning an existing forum based community into a modern activity stream based platform. A little trickier than we originally thought, especially with legacy database structures and Cold Fusion…

There’s lots of other things bubbling under too, a few crazy ideas (Darwin…), a new support system (help.simpleweb.co.uk) and a wedding (Wooohoo big love to Sarah B for the big day on Saturday).

Office Video Competition

by Mark P. Filed under: Company

Every now and again we like to spend some time figuring out how warped each of us at Simpleweb truly is…

Tom has discovered a very simple mechanism that gets people to think about how other people think. We ask everybody to submit a video link, which goes to Tom. Once all the videos are “in” they are circulated to everybody that’s taken part. Each person then needs to guess who has submitted what and also choose a favourite.

It’s a very interesting snippet of silliness that forces you to try and think like the rest of your team. This time it was a little more difficult than last, as we chose specifically just tech vids last time. We also had a wildcard as well with Sam submitting a video as well.

Thirsty Bristol #2

by Sarah Bale Filed under: Company

Thanks to everyone who made it along to The Big Chill for ThirstyBristol in January!  We had a great time and we hope you did too.

Before I say anything else I want to especially thank our sponsors for putting some money behind the bar and ensuring that the night was, erm, well lubricated. So a big thanks to LoveHoney, Simpleweb and Coull TV [update] And EventStreams for their lovely Event CMS.

Thirsty Bristol 2011

ThirstyBristol is all about getting digital startups together under one roof and sharing ideas, successes, failures and laughs. So far we think this is working out pretty well! We met some great people and with 80+ attendees it clearly is something that people want to get involved in.

January’s speakers included:

  • Pete Blackman (DoubleArt) on Branding for Start-ups
  • Irfon Watkins (Coull TV) on “No one cares about your start-up but you”

Massive thank you’s to our three speakers. We have had nothing but great feedback about all of the presentations and we know a lot of people found them very useful. We are already lining up our speakers for March and will let you know when the date has been confirmed.  You can keep up to date in the usual place wearethirsty.co.uk, and do not forget to follow us on Twitter @ThirstyBristol.

In the meantime if you have some feedback, a suggestion or fancy yourself as a presenter please get in touch! We would love to hear from you!! If we do not see you before, we look forward to seeing you in March!

Special thanks to @Jason_mayes for taking the photos (to see more check out the Thirsty Bristol Flickr page) and to @helloemsy for all her effort and Twitter management!

Pagani Zonda and Zubworld

by Mark P. Filed under: Company

We haven’t blogged about Zubworld yet… It’s a location based community site, you buy a Zub and create a community around it, with conversations, videos and events.

There’s nothing like a £600,000 car arriving at your office covered in decals of a product that you’ve built to get the motivation synapses firing.

Here’s a few pictures of a beautiful piece of machinery and Tom looking exceptionally happy with himself.

More to come on Zubworld from us soon, case study and new features…

Simpleweb take some time out to speed up

by Sarah Bale Filed under: Company

Anyone who knows us here at Simpleweb will know that we believe in working hard and playing hard, so it will come as no surprise to you that we were fortunate enough to be able to go and experience a track day down at Keevil Airfield, Wiltshire.

The cars

We were lucky enough to have 2 cars for the day, a Westfield and a Lotus Elise both courtesy of BPC on Track.

The track of choice was an old airfield (as the name might suggest!) and there is no racing or timing allowed, just driving for the fun of it.

It was a beautifully sunny day, to the point of slight sunburn (!), and there were a number of awesome cars to get excited about on the track.  Needless to say there were definitely times, namely when one of us was driving in between a Ferrari and a 911, when we were suddenly very grateful for the rule that each owner is responsible for their own car as opposed to being fully comp!

Everyone had their personal preferences, some preferred the Westfield for its speed and rawness whilst others preferred the Lotus Elise for its agility, smooth gear changes and fast acceleration, either way everyone seemed to be loving the experience!

Team Building

All morning we were driving around with the BPC on Track experts, taking it in turns to learn the route and gain a bit of confidence.  After lunch (some surprisingly tasty burgers from the onsite burger van) we were able to go back out in the car but this time with each other…

Now, people often talk about team building exercises and establishing trust; falling back and catching your colleague springs to mind, but there is nothing quite like sitting in the passenger seat when you know that the person you are trusting with your life drove around a track for the first time 2 hours ago!

1 more black flag and you are out!

You are told at the start of the day about certain rules you must abide by. One of these rules relates to different coloured flags that are waved around the track to get your attention and tell you something.  The flag you definitely DO NOT want to see is a black flag. This means you have done something wrong; spun the car, overtaken dangerously, whatever it is you have to come straight off the track and report back to the organisers for a telling off!

If your car gets 3 black flags then you are not allowed back on the track. We managed 2 between us, which I suppose does not sound too bad, but in that I do not think any other black flags were raised all day for anyone else, it is not great!

A Sexi surprise

As we approached the end of the day, Christos was awarded the title of best driver for the day! His prize for achieving such a title was to sit in the Marlin Sexi, whilst a professional driver raced (sorry, drove very quickly!) around the track.  We watched in amazement and I think it was noticed as 2 of us were then offered a chance to have the same experience! I was one of the lucky ones and I did not say a word the whole 10 laps.  It is very easy to see how people become addicted!

As you can probably tell it was a brilliant day had by all, and we could not be more grateful to Tom and Mark for taking us.  We just hope next time Mark can come with us rather than being stuck in the office unable to find his drivers license!
